Update Your Wirelessly DualSense Controller

It can be annoying to have to sit comfortably on your chair, boot up your PS5, and then have to get up again to plug your controller in just because you have been notified of an update. Wirelessly updating your controller is extremely convenient, and can benefit it in many ways. Now you know how to do it.

How to Reset a PS5 Controller

Sometimes a reset is needed to fix long or short-standing issues with your DualSense controller. Here's how you can do that.

The DualSense controller, like any other piece of hardware, is prone to having issues. But luckily, Sony makes it easy to reset when troubleshooting the problems you're experiencing.

You can perform a soft or hard reset on your DualSense controller, depending on the problem, and we're going to show you how.

If you're experiencing minor issues with your DualSense's performance or connection, a soft reset can eliminate any temporary firmware glitches that could be causing it. A soft reset is basically just turning the controller off and on again. To do that, follow the steps below:

  1. On the home screen, press the PS button to bring up the Control Center and select Accessories.
  2. Select the controller from the list of accessories and then select Turn Off in the menu that appears.

Now, turn the controller back on again and check if the problem has been resolved.

If a soft reset didn't work, then returning the controller to its default settings with a hard reset can do the trick. To perform a hard reset on your DualSense controller, follow the steps below:

1. Grab a paper clip, toothpick, or any pointy, thin object.

2. Locate the small hole at the back of the DualSense controller (that's where the reset button is located).

3. Push the pointy, thin object into the hole (stop when you feel you've pushed the reset button) and hold for five seconds.

When you turn the controller back on, it should be able to automatically sync with your PS5 and turn it on. But if it fails, plug it into the PS5 with a USB-C cable and press the Power button on the console to turn it on and re-sync the controller. Now, you should be able to use your controller to the full, including the DualSense's hidden features.

How to Update Your Wirelessly DualSense Controller

In the old days, when Sony released a new controller update, you had to plug your DualSense controller into your PlayStation 5 using a USB-C cable in order to install it. Now you no longer have to leave the comfort of your seat to do it. That's right, you can update your PS5 controller wirelessly, and we're going to show you how to do it.

Update Your PS5

To have the ability to wirelessly update your controller, you need to make sure that your PS5 is running the latest firmware update. So, if you haven't done so lately, make sure to update your PS5. Updates are also important because they can also introduce things like new features, bug fixes, performance improvements, and security upgrades.

Go to the Controller Settings Screen

Once you update your PS5, and it grabs the latest controller update from Sony's servers, you should be able to update your controller right from the Home Screen when you boot up your console. Once the prompt comes up, all you have to do is select Update Now.

If someone else is using your console, or you weren't paying attention, the Notify After 24 Hours option might have been selected. If that is the case, and you want to update your controller right away, you can go to the controller settings to update the controller.

To do that, press the PS button to bring up the Control Center and select Accessories.

Start the Wireless Update

In Controller Settings, navigate to the DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software option and make sure it says Update available on the right. If it does, select it.

To trigger the wireless update, just select Update. Since this is not a full system software update, the process will only take a few seconds to complete. If you find that the Update option is grayed out, connect your PS5 controller to the console with a USB-C cable and update it the old way. The next time, your controller will be able to update wirelessly.
